Weld can end Oaks drought
I was as surprised as anyone that Taghrooda didn't appear in the field of runners for tomorrow's Irish Oaks and after she was so impressive at Epsom I was really looking forward to seeing the daughter of Sea The Stars in the flesh at HQ.
However, the owner was in a fortunate position that he could call on Dermot Weld's Tarfasha in her absence and I think the Epsom form will stand up to question and she can provide Dermot with his first win in the race since I teamed up with him and Dance Design in 1996.
I was actually riding work for John Oxx on Tuesday morning and Dermot Weld's string were out extremely early and they were first out and got onto the gallops before us which wouldn't be a regular occurrence but the upside to it was that I got to see Tarfasha work and she seemed to finish out her work very well and I'm sure she's in good form since Epsom.
Luca Cumani's filly Volume also ran a very good race at Epsom and there was only a nose between the two of them in the English Oaks so I'm sure Luca's filly will make it a good test but hopefully the race can stay at home.
It is certainly a surprise that the race has gone abroad so often in the last decade or so especially when Ballydoyle have had some very good fillies over the years.
He runs five in the race tomorrow and as always they all have to be respected.
It's interesting to see that Joseph has gone for Tapestry over the likes of Bracelet and Marvellous but you would have to imagine that her homework has pointed him in that direction.
Have no doubt, Aidan would have never worked those fillies with each other. Never would he pitch the Group One horses into a group and send them off to find out which is the best, but Joseph would have got an idea from sitting on each of them and riding them work and of course in their races and it will be interesting to see Tapestry step up in trip and how she fares out.
My Titania will return to action on Sunday when she takes up her engagement in the Kilboy Estate Stakes. She just took a week or so to get back on keel after Royal Ascot and her work has been fine since and the thundery showers are forecast and will be very much welcome.
An extra furlong will be a help to her and it will give us a nice idea of where we are going for the season if she could capture it.
It looks a nice opportunity for her but he will face six rivals and Sir Michael Stoute and Karl Burke sending over two nice fillies that have to be respected.
On official ratings we are just behind Mango Diva and Odeliz but the conditions of the race see us getting 9lbs so that is a help.
