Trap: Door not closed on McClean
GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI insists he has not closed the Euro 2012 door on Sunderland's flying wing man, James McClean.
The Ireland boss today stressed that while he has an abundance of wide midfield options, he has yet to finalise a decision on whether McClean will be brought on the plane to Poland.
The Derryman has exploded on the Premier League this season, but he was handed just 12 minutes to impress on his international debut against the Czech Republic last week and there are major doubts about whether Trapattoni will include him in his squad for the Euros.
Speaking today at a UEFA Euro 2012 workshop in Warsaw, the veteran Italian said: “We have a good squad. We have McGeady, we have Duff, we have Hunt, many many players for this situation. But we follow him (McClean) because he is young, his mentality is very strong … I have not decided in this moment whether he can participate in Euro or not.”
Meanwhile, Trapattoni also sounded a positive note on Richard Dunne's fitness battle, predicting that his defensive lionheart should have recovered from his fractured shoulder in time for the Euros.
He said they had been in touch with the Aston Villa player who indicated that he will be ready to return for the last two games of the Premier League season.
