Towell goes on trial with Cardiff City
DUNDALK star Richie Towell will try to earn move back to Britain this week if he can impress at Championship side Cardiff City.
Just days after he helped Dundalk win the Premier Division title, the 23-year-old is on trial with Cardiff and City boss Russell Slade says he will run his eye over Towell in an U21 game against Chelsea on Thursday.
"Richie is an attacking midfielder, a very athletic and fit lad. We've had him training and he's found it pretty intense, to be honest," said Slade.
"He's got an eye for goal. I think he was in double figures from midfield for Dundalk as they won the title, so we are really looking forward to working with him.
"Premier League sides and other Championship sides have been monitoring him, but we've decided to dive in and he will play for us in a game with Chelsea," added Slade.
Cardiff are keen to add to their squad as attacking midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi has been ruled out for up to four months, but of course if they did make a move for Towell (above), the Tallaght man would not be clear to play for the Bluebirds until the New Year.
Towell, who had spells in the SPL with Celtic and Hibs, has expressed his interest in playing cross channel again and while a number of League One clubs had been linked with the midfielder, a Championship move would be ideal for the Dubliner.
Dundalk team-mate Andy Boyle has also attracted interest from clubs in England and Lilywhites boss Stephen Kenny admits it may be hard to keep his league-winning squad intact.
