Tobin's four-minute mile Tipp test

MILE CHALLENGE : Seán Tobin
MILE CHALLENGE : Seán Tobin

SeÁn Tobin will attempt to become the first man to run under four minutes for the mile in Co Tipperary at Moyne AC's 70th Anniversary Games on Thursday next week (6.30).

Tobin is hoping that a strong field will help push him to his goal - and with €200 going to the race winner plus €500 if the 4-minute barrier is broken, he could be looking at a good pay day.

The Clonmel man ran 3 mins 57 secs at last year's Cork City Sports and 3:58.28 indoors at the Millrose Games in New York last February Earlier this month, he ran 4:02.69 for the distance. There's also men's B mile.

Also scheduled is an 800m race for women with €200 to the winner and €300 if under 2 mins 5 secs. That's a reasonable target for a number of locally based athletes. The races will show off Moyne's newly installed four-lane synthetic track.

Over the shorter distances, Sharlene Mawdsley of Newport AC, who had struggled with injury since competing at the European U20 Championships last summer, makes a long-awaited comeback over 200m. The 19-year-old student won the national indoor 200m title in 2017. Her best 200m time of 23.55 secs dates back to 2016.

The good news is that Mawdsley is back training with Drew and Hayley Harrison, coaches to Thomas Barr.

Also on the night's programme are 400m races for seniors and masters in A and B categories, a junior men's long jump and a senior men's weight for distance, with cash prizes thanks to generous local sponsorship. Entry fee is €10.
