Sharapova overcomes errors to book place in Sony semi-finalsFour-time runner-up Maria Sharapova overcame an uneven performance at the Sony Open to reach the semi-finals by beating Sara Errani 7-5, 7-5 at Key Biscayne, Florida.
Sharapova made 57 unforced errors, including 13 double-faults, and had to save three set points in the second set.
Errani, seeded No 8, has now been beaten 26 times against opponents ranked in the top five.
Sharapova, meanwhile, completed a career Grand Slam last year but has never won in Key Biscayne. She lost in the final in 2005, '06, '11 and '12.
She's bidding to become the third woman to win Indian Wells and Key Biscayne in the same year, joining Steffi Graf and Kim Clijsters.
