Staunton hands out a master class to Jackies
CORA STAUNTON just keeps on pouring out the Mayo.
The Wonder-Woman of Gaelic football was at it again at DCU on Sunday afternoon.
She scored 11 points, eight frees, as Mayo overcame Dublin, 0-13 to 0-8, in Division 1 of the Tesco Home Grown NFL.
Cora showed all her renowned craft and desire as Mayo earned a worthy victory.
She hit seven points in the first half, six frees, to help the visitors lead at the interval, 0-8 to 0-3.
It was Sinead Goldrick who opened Dublin's scoring. Lucy Collins added a free and the industrious Nicole Owens popped over a point.
For the second period, Dublin boss, Gregory McGonigle, introduced Noelle Healy and Niamh Rickard to inject some pace up-front.
The hosts did see more possession, but they found it difficult to turn it to profit. They rattled the frame, while several shots fell short of the green.
Yvonne Byrne did more than most to keep the Mayo garden gate shut. She wore the number 14 jersey, but she played superbly as sweeper.
Dublin's second half scores came from captain, Lyndsey Davey 0-3 (2 frees), Amy Connolly and Rickard.
The Jackies travel to play Kerry at the Legion Club in Killarney next Sunday.
