Zieler: Saints have Bundes' of talent

YET ANOTHER defeat on German soil for an Irish club in European competition, but HC Hannover's German international keeper Ron-Robert Zieler believes that some of the players in Liam Buckley's side have the potential to come back and play in the German Bundesliga.

Former Manchester United trainee Zieler, who was a member of Germany's squad at Euro 2012, was generally untroubled over 180 minutes against Pat's but he admits he was impressed with the Dubliners.

"I'm not a coach and I can't decide what players to buy, but I did see a lot of players with potential in the St Pat's squad," Zieler told the Evening Herald.

"Of course they could play in the Bundesliga, why not? We have players from Norway and other countries so maybe it's time that an Irish player got a chance to play in the German league.

"St Pat's came here, they tried their best but they didn't just sit back and defend. But we have such a strong side, I think we were always going to go through," added the keeper, who did have a nervous moment early on when Pat's skipper Conor Kenna struck the crossbar.

"Yeah, if that had gone in maybe the game would have been different but I was happy to see the chance go off the bar and away," he admitted.

Zieler was also pleased to have kept a clean sheet against Pat's forward Chris Fagan, his old team-mate from the United youth academy. "It was nice to see Chris again, we lived together in digs when we were in Manchester and I'm glad he didn't score against me," Zieler added.
