Walsh’s law lands Port double
PORTLAW.............................4 CARRICK UNITED.....................
PORTLAW landed the double as they overcame a gallant Carrick side to capture the Under 11 Cup. Having beaten Stradbally the previous week, Portlaw were back in the winners enclosure at the Village Grounds in Ferrybank on Saturday afternoon last as they got the better of Carrick United to win the Under-11 league playoff.
An excellent second-half display saw two headed goals from Luke Walsh see off the opposition. Portlaw didn’t have things all their own way during the early stages however as netminder Peter Boylan was called upon to make a couple of early saves to deny Manus McFadden and Jake Hennebry after only three minutes. Portlaw went in front on 15 minutes when Daryl Walsh whipped in a super right-wing corner kick that found Adam Walsh at the back post and he found the net.
Carrick had a chance to level the tie six minutes before the sound of the half-time whistle when Lee Costello turned provider for midfielder Oran Brophy with a great right-wing delivery but his free header from close-range was just wide of the far post. Portlaw came out all guns blazing for the second half and doubled their lead on 34 minutes when another superb Daryl Walsh delivery this time landed on the head of one of the smallest players on the field – Luke Walsh. His super header gave ’keeper Ian Holloway no chance.
Walsh increased the lead for his side with another brave header seven minutes later after getting on the end of a Brandon Powell cross before a serious leftfooted strike from Daryl Walsh put the icing on the cake for a superb Portlaw victory.
