Vettel on verge of title
F1: Sebastian Vettel is now aware of the maths needed for him to cement his place in the record books.
Vettel produced arguably his best drive of the year, leading all of the 61 laps of the Singapore Grand Prix to leave him one point shy of retaining his world title.
Vettel leads McLaren's Jenson Button by 124 points after the Briton finished second. There are now just 125 points available from the last five races, starting in Japan in a fortnight.
Vettel, who had previously buried his head in the sand when it has come to the scenario, said: "For Japan, I'm obviously smart enough to work it out myself now!"
ATHLETICS: Kenyan Patrick Makau dethroned king of the roads Haile Gebrselassie at the Berlin marathon by slashing 21 seconds off the Ethiopian's world record. Makau clocked two hours three minutes 38 seconds.
CYCLING: Mark Cavendish won the UCI Road Race World Championship title with a trademark burst to cross the line in Copenhagen ahead of Australia's Matt Goss and Germany's Andre Greipel. He became Britain's first world road champion since 1965. Matt Brameier was the best of the Irish in 36th place.
