United left black and blue

BATTERED and bruised Alex Ferguson believes that his shame-faced derby disasters will struggle to recover from the embarrassment of his "worst day" in charge of Manchester United.

"We have to recover," he said after watching his players ripped to pieces in a 6-1 defeat by bitter rivals Manchester City. "In the history of Manchester United this is another day and we will recover.

"But that kind of defeat will impact on the players. There's a lot of embarrassment in that dressing room and rightly so," he added.

A bad day for Old Trafford was capped when members of the Glazer family had to speed away from the ground under attack from missile throwing and angry fans.

Across town, Roberto Mancini had his feet firmly on the ground.

"This is important for our confidence but United know, like me, there are only three points and this is only one game."
