Stokes is on the mark for Irish U19s

IRELAND'S U19 side enjoyed the best-possible start to their European Championship qualifying campaign as they earned a 1-0 Group Six win over Malta last night.

Eoghan Stokes picked up a cross from Galway FC man Ryan Manning on 17 minutes and the Leeds United man beat the Maltese keeper to give Ireland the lead.

Manning and Harry Charlsey went close to adding another goal for Ireland later on while Ireland's Belgian-based keeper Liam Bossin was well-protected by his back four and he kept a clean sheet. Next up for Ireland is a clash with Gibraltar at Wexford's Ferrycarrig Park tomorrow (3pm) with the final game of the four-team tournament against Switzerland in Waterford on Tuesday night.
