STOKE City boss Mark Hughes hopes that Ireland forward Jonathan Walters will stay on at the club even though Norwich City remain keen to do a deal before the transfer window closes tomorrow.

Last week Stoke rejected a £1.5million bid from the Canaries for Walters, who is in the last year of his contract with Stoke and has been frustrated by the progress of talks on a new deal.

Boss Hughes left Walters out of the squad for their weekend clash with West Brom as he felt the player was not in the right frame of mine to play

"To involve him when his focus maybe isn't totally on the game would have been hard on some of the others," Hughes said.

"It's no fault of Jon's - there's a lot of noise around him. I just took the decision myself.

"We hope he will stay - our stance hasn't changed. He is still part of what we are trying to do. We will have to wait and see."
