Stephen salutes captaincy

DUBLINER Stephen Ward is revelling in his new role as captain fantastic for Wolves after leading the side out for their Premier League draw with Newcastle United last weekend.

"It was a big honour to be captain," Ward says.

"I had been captain before, once in the league and once in the Cup, but to get the armband for such a big game, away to Newcastle, was a huge thing for me.

"TC (Terry Connor) made his decision on the team last Friday and took me aside to ask me if I'd take the armband. It's not something I'd expected so it was very pleasing, to lead the team out and then for us to get a good result.

"It wasn't looking good for us when we were 2-0 down and I was hoping that I wouldn't have a bad defeat to show for my chance as team captain.

"So it was great that we showed our character and came back to avoid defeat.

"It was a really proud moment to lead the team out and then see us get a draw."
