St John's sides draw in '87 get-together

ST JOHN'S COLLEGE tried to settle a 26-year-old debate as the school's 1987 First Year and Junior Cup champions came together for a reunion match.

The Ballyfermot school welcomed representatives from both of the successful Leinster and national cup-winning sides last Friday. Perhaps fittingly, the resulting 3-3 draw meant that the title of the school's team of the century was not decided definitively.

Former Ireland international David Savage struck the first blow for the First Year side with an unstoppable long-range effort.

The Junior Cup winners were back on level terms soon after as Noel Ward hit the top corner with an equally-impressive effort. Former Ireland junior international Stephen Barry illustrated how he has lost none of his own skill when he gave the older team a 2-1 lead from the second half kick-off, firing a lob from the halfway line that beat goalkeeper Andy Conroy.

The League of Ireland Premier Division winner recently with St Patrick's Athletic, and guest player on the day for the First Year side, Ian Bermingham, levelled proceedings.

That didn't stop the Junior Cup boys regaining the lead for the second time in the game with what looked like the winner from Joe O'Brien, but Mark O'Neill salvaged a draw for his side.

U16 TEAM: Anthony Lee; Alan Keating, Jimmy Hennessy, David Dooley, Peter Dunne, Antho Murray, Barry O'Connor, Stephen Barry, Joe O'Brien, Noel Ward, Phil Gorman. Subs: Stephen Sutcliffe, Paul Tyrell.
