Sligo blow as North out for season

SLIGO ROVERS' title hopes have suffered a major blow with the news that leading scorer Danny North (above) is out for the rest of the season, writes AIDAN FITZMAURICE.

North had only signed a new contract with Rovers last week and he was a key figure in their title charge, but the former St Patrick's Athletic man picked up a knee injury in Thursday's Europa League draw at home to Spartak Trnava and needs immediate surgery.

The player confirmed on his Twitter account that he had ruptured his anterior cruciate and will miss the rest of the season.

With the domestic transfer window closing next week, Rovers boss Ian Baraclough may be forced to bring in a new striker to fill in for the absent North.
