Sheppard signs in Hoops swoop
KARL Sheppard will line out for Shamrock Rovers in the Champions League next season after agreeing a move from Galway United.
Rovers boss Michael O'Neill made a serious move on the transfer market yesterday with a triple swoop, signing Galway pair Sheppard and Stephen O'Donnell as well as Sligo Rovers star Gary McCabe.
Rovers also re-signed defender Enda Stevens.
"We have been working hard since the season ended to secure the kind of players we want at this club. And these four players are exactly that. They are young, hungry players, who like to play football and want to win things," said O'Neill.
"I am delighted to have added these players to our squad, and I'm sure they have great careers ahead of them at Shamrock Rovers."
Former Everton man Sheppard was in demand after his success with Galway last season, Sheppard scoring 10 goals for Galway as he played a big part in their feat of avoiding relegation.
He had been linked with a move abroad but Rovers boss Michael O'Neill has persuaded the Dubliner to join the Hoops.
Rovers were in the market for a striker following the retirement of Dessie Baker and O'Neill will be glad to have secured the signing of Sheppard.
But his exit from Terryland Park along with O'Donnell is a big blow for Galway, who had already lost defender Seamus Conneely (Sheffield United), Barry Ryan (Limerick) and Rhys Meynell (Stalybridge).
Meanwhile, Dundalk have lost another member of last season's squad as former Manchester City man Garry Breen has joined Irish League side Portadown.
Breen has played for Galway United and Dundalk since moving back to Ireland in 2008 after spells with Manchester City and Hereford United and he made 27 league appearances for the Lilywhites last season.
But now Breen has opted to follow the example of striker Matthew Tipton and move to Portadown.
Faz Kuduzovic and Tiaran Mulvenna have also left Oriel Park while striker Steven Lennon is training with Scottish side Stirling Albion.
