Shay: Banter will keep boys on Euro high

SHAY Given is hoping that some traditional Irish banter will keep spirits high during the Euro 2012 finals.

Giovanni Trapattoni's squad face at least four weeks living on hotel food and the tedium of long periods of relative inactivity followed by short sharp intensity on match day.

"You've got to bounce off each other and keep each other going because it can get a bit tedious in the hotel," claimed Given.

"I've been around squads for quite a while and we enjoy meeting up. We all enjoy the craic around the hotel.

"You need that because you are training for a few hours and spend the rest of the time in your room.

"Then there is the travelling so you do need characters in the camp. We have a few of them so that definitely helps."

Given, like several other members of Trapattoni's squad, has been talking up Ireland's chances in advance of the big kick-off in June.

"The bar is high but we've been setting our own standards and a few players have been quoted as saying that we won't be happy just going there, sitting back and thinking we did well by getting there.

"We want to go out there and really justify ourselves and prove to everybody that we are a good team," he added.
