Sean steals show again for Preston
Preston duo Sean Maguire and Alan Browne sent out a message to Martin O'Neill, in the week that he names his squad for a friendly with Turkey, by finding the net to boost their club's promotion hopes.
Alex Neil's side had to manage without Maguire for four months after he needed surgery on a hamstring problem but the Kilkenny native is making up for lost time. He scored twice, having come off the bench, in Saturday's win over Bolton and Maguire netted again off the bench last night, claiming the winner in a 2-1 defeat of Bristol City.
His fellow Cork City old boy Alan Browne had scored midway through the first half but Maguire's 69th minute strike was the key moment of the game and Preston are now just one point off the playoff places.
But sorry Sunderland are heading for the third tier, the Black Cats humiliated by a 3-0 loss at home to Aston Villa. Glenn Whelan and Scott Hogan started for a promotion-chasing Villa side as goals from Lewis, James Chester and a Bryan Oviedo own goal downed Sunderland.
Former Ireland midfielder Graham Kavanagh was on hand to see his son, Callum, make his Irish debut as the Republic's U15 side beat Cyprus 2-0 last night at Oriel Park with goals from
Cork City's Oran Crowe and Spanish-based recruit Anselmo Garcia McNulty (Real Betis) scored for Jason Donoghue's side.
