Robbie will get better – McLeish

ROBBIE KEANE HAS been backed by Alex McLeish to deliver for Aston Villa despite drawing a blank on his debut for the club on Saturday.

Keane played for just nine minutes in Villa's 1-1 draw at Everton – on a day when outcast Stephen Ireland was Villa's man of the match – and looked off the pace.

But McLeish believes he can get value for money from the Dubliner once he gets his fitness up to scratch.

“Robbie was bright, he didn't start because he hasn't played for two or three weeks and he's been travelling across the pond,” said McLeish.

“It's not easy for someone to be 100 per cent after ten minutes and three days of training. We will try and manage it the right way,” said McLeish.

“Robbie hopefully will make an impact. We've brought him here to make an impact, not only on the pitch but also with his experience in the dressing room and his brightness.”

Keane's Villa debut came on a mixed weekend for Ireland's Premier League strikers.

Leon Best scored his first goal for Newcastle since September to give them a 1-0 win over QPR and Shane Long netted a penalty for Aston Villa, but Kevin Doyle was worryingly left on the bench for Wolves against Spurs.
