Rathangan in pole position
KILDARE TOWN.........................0 RATHANGAN AFC.......................3
RATHANGAN joined Castle Villa in pole position in the Aermax Services Division 3 by virtue of this comfortable win over Town at Rathbride Road.
Both sides fielded a good mixture of youth and experience with Paul Fulhan pulling the strings from the centre-back position for the eventual winners. The early exchanges were even with defences being on top and neither side being able to create any goal-scoring chances of note.
Rathangan broke the deadlock three minutes from the interval when Brian Kenna and Chris Malone combined to create an opening for Darren Kennedy and the midfielder finished in style with an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box.
One minute into the second half Kildare came close to levelling when Michael O’Carroll freed Jason Kane down the rightwing and his cross was met byMaher, but the striker could not guide his header on target. The visitors doubled their advantage just past the hour mark when Dave Reddy picked up the ball in midfield and weaved his way through a hesitant Town defence before drawing ’keeper Johnny Clarke and side-footing to the net.
The West Kildare side made sure of the points when David Cassidy got on the end of a nicely weighted through-ball from Barry O’Connell with nine minutes remaining, and he gave ’keeper Clarke no chance with a neat finish from just inside the box.
The winners had Man of the Match in midfielder Dave Reddy, with David Cassidy and ’keeper Mark Doyle also impressing. Johnny Phelan in midfield, Gary Daly and Ian Murphy at the back and Eamonn Maher up front stood out for the home side.
