Rafter joins Cork

CORK CITY boss John Caulfield believes that he has found a player with real potential after he brought in striker Michael Rafter from Derry City, writes AIDAN FITZMAURICE.

The Tipperary native was Derry's second-top scorer last season but he was unsettled at the Brandywell and Caulfield has now swooped to bring Rafter back to Munster.

"Michael got twelve goals from just nineteen starts last season with Derry. He has shown the potential he has, so we just need to get more consistency from him," says Caulfield.

"He's only 21, he's a very attacking player and we are delighted to have them. Over the years we have had a lot of Tipperary guys, such as (Stephen) Napier, (Ollie) Cahill and (Kelvin) Flanagan, who have done well at the club, and I am hoping he will be a big success for us."

Rafter is the third major signing of the close season for Cork, who also brought in striker Anthony Elding from Sligo Rovers and also re-signed Billy Dennehy after his four-year spell with Shamrock Rovers.
