Petit defends Martial
Anthony Martial is not being given the confidence to succeed at Manchester United, according to former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit.
The 21-year-old Martial made 43 appearances for United last season, but had a far more subdued campaign in his second season in Manchester after becoming the world's most expensive teenager in September 2015.
Petit believes that Jose Mourinho and the Frenchman's United teammates are not giving him enough confidence, meaning he has taken a step back in his career for club and country. Martial was omitted from the French squad for the June fixtures while competition for places is set to increase at United next season with the expected signing of winger Ivan Perisic.
Petit said: "Martial was very good the first months with Manchester United and since Mourinho has managed the team he's not in the same position anymore. It's a risk. Talent is something very important in football but you need to have confidence as well from team-mates and your manager."
