Pats put on the backfoot by Cliftonville

ST PATRICK'S Athletic face a battle to get into the next round of the Setanta Sports Cup after they went down 1-0 to Cliftonville in Belfast last night, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.

The Reds knocked Pats out of the competition at the first round stage 12 months ago and Pats need a comeback in the home leg next Monday.

A new season saw a new-look Pats side use no less than nine close-season signings (Brendan Clarke, Ger O'Brien, Kenny Browne, James Chambers, Mark Rossiter, Christopher Forrester, Darren Meenan, Stephen O'Flynn and Chris Fagan) and they began well, Fagan and Forrester coming close to opening the scoring.

But it was Northern Ireland inter-national Liam Boyce who nicked the only goal of the game, beating keeper Clarke three minutes into the second half.

POLISH international Dawid Janczyk impressed during his trial with First Division side Limerick as he scored in a pre-season friendly against Sligo Rovers last night.

Limerick, favourites to win the eight-team Division One title in 2012, have brought CSKA Moscow duo Janczyk and Czech U21 cap Lubos Kalouda in on trial and they were both handed a runout in last night's friendly against Sligo in Galway, a 3-2 win for managerless Sligo.
