Palace put trial on the table for free agent Finn
FORMER UCD star Ronan Finn could join the exodus of League of Ireland players going to England as Crystal Palace have offered the Dubliner a trial, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.
Finn was under contract with Sporting Fingal and due to begin the new season tonight with a Setanta Sports Cup clash against Lisburn Distillery, but he and the rest of the Fingal players are now free agents following the club's collapse.
Since the end of last season, seven players have left the League of Ireland to join British clubs (Conor Powell, Paul Keegan, Paddy Madden, Mark McCrystal, Seamus Conneely, Dave McAllister and James Chambers), with many more on the way to Australia.
And there could now be even more departures to England and Scotland since the demise of Fingal, as Sporting duo Finn and Shaun Williams have been linked with moves.
Finn and Williams were on trial at Celtic and Wolves and Celtic were very keen on Williams but Fingal rejected a bid for the midfielder.
Now Palace have set their sights on Finn and asked the former U21 cap to join on trial, starting today.
As the transfer window in Britain has closed, Finn would not be able to play for a club until next summer but he would be in a position to sign a pre-contract and join a League of Ireland side until the window opens again in July.
