O’Neill:McClean ready for Euros

MARTIN O'NEILL has given his backing to James McClean's bid to break into the Republic of Ireland squad for the Euro 2012 finals.

Sunderland boss O'Neill is delighted with the form of the former Derry City player. McClean has now scored three goals for the Black Cats, most recently the winner against Stoke City last Saturday.

Irish fans are waiting to see if McClean (left) makes the cut when Giovanni Trapattoni names his squad on Friday for the February 29 friendly against the Czech Republic. But O'Neill already knows that McClean is good enough to go to Poland with the squad in the summer.

“I think he's more than capable of going to Euro 2012,” said O'Neill.

“I don't know Trapattoni and I haven't spoken to him at all. He'll have the players he wants to stay pretty loyal to, those who've got him there through thick and thin. Somebody fresh wanting to get in might be difficult.

“But could James go there on merit? Absolutely. Hopefully he's making such an impact he'll be watched by someone in the Ireland camp, even if it's not Trapattoni. They couldn't fail to be impressed.”
