O'Neill wins Writers gong

MICHAEL O'NEILL picked up one final piece of silverware from his time at Shamrock Rovers as the new Northern Ireland boss was last night named as Personality of the Year by the Airtricity Soccer Writers Association, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.

O'Neill, who quit Rovers last month and has since taken over the North's senior team, beat off competition from Sligo Rovers pair Paul Cook and Joseph Ndo, Shamrock Rovers hero Pat Sullivan, Cork City boss Tommy Dunne and the league's top scorer, Eamon Zayed, to land the prestigious award.

Derry City keeper Ger Doherty won the trophy for Goalkeeper of the Year, ahead of Gary Rogers and Brendan Clarke.

The SWAI also presented Giovanni Trapattoni with an award for his feat in leading the Republic's senior team to Euro 2012 qualification.

Former Ireland boss Eoin Hand was given a special merit award.
