Mick McCarthy has told Aiden O'Brien to ignore the fact that he's a late call-up to the Ireland squad and go out and deliver for Ireland in Gibraltar if called upon.

Having failed to make the cut for the 25-man squad, O'Brien was enjoying some time off and was on a visit to Dublin Zoo on Monday when he got the call to join up with the squad.

Seán Maguire is expected to start up front with a possible role for David McGoldrick, but McCarthy says O'Brien can get a chance./

"He's thrilled to be in the squad, of course. He was in Dublin for the weekend, had to fly back and get his boots and fly back here," said McCarthy.

"I said that he's one of our players who scored at the weekend. He scored against Brighton and it was a good goal as well. So who knows, you come out of the blue and you get a chance."

Maguire sat out the squad's final training session in Dublin yesterday before departure to Gibraltar but McCarthy is not concerned and says rest is just a part of the striker's plan.

"That's his programme and we're more than happy to adhere to it. We just want to get him on the pitch and get him playing."
