North 'delighted' to extend Sligo contract

SLIGO ROVERS striker Danny North has spoken of his delight at signing a new contract with the Bit o' Red until the end of the 2013 season.

North, who has enjoyed a prolific start to his career with Rovers, has hit 17 goals in 20 games so far this year to help Ian Baraclough's men lead the Airtricity League Premier Division by six points.

North said: "I'm delighted to get my future sorted for another year."

He continued: "I'm always looking to be among the goals but to get so many early on, you've got to be happy with that.

"I'm going to try to improve and do that every day in training and on the pitch. It is nice to be knowing where my future lies, there is that little less pressure.

"The club came to me and wanted to tie me down and the deal was right so I signed it. I wouldn't have come here if I didn't think it was right for me."

The Bit o' Red begin their Europa League campaign on Thursday as they face an away leg against Spartak Trnava in second round qualifying. The striker is looking forward to the European adventure: "Europe is coming and hopefully it is not too much of a distraction. We can't let it affect us. It is good to play in Europe but obviously the main thing is the league.

"We've got to knuckle down between now and the end of the season and give it a good go. It is exciting. We're looking forward to it. You go to places you've never been before and it is an experience."

Meanwhile, the draw for the third round of the FAI Cup took place live on MNS yesterday with Shamrock Rovers' home tie with Cork City the pick of the bunch.

The hat contained an odd number due to Monaghan United's progression over holders Sligo Rovers in the second round before the club withdrew from the League and Cup in mid-June. As a result, St Pat's received a bye to the quarter-finals after being the first team drawn. The ties will take place on the week ending Sunday August 26.
