No time for panic at Anfield
DON'T panic! For any Liverpool supporters out there worried about another defeat, Aston Villa will do the same to a lot of teams before this season is over.
When I sat down in my seat in the stand and saw the Villa team, I knew straight away it would be difficult.
Names like Senderos, Hutton, Delph and Richardson have been around the block, know how to do a professional job and they put up a white wall which Liverpool just couldn't break through.
It was very impressive by Villa and they deserve credit. Liverpool just hit one of those days and I'm not worried by it.
That said, Old Trafford yesterday showed what can happen when you spend £20 or £30 million on a player who is the finished article and good to go from the start.
Angel di Maria cost a lot of money but he could walk into any team in the world and improve it. I've argued for some time that Liverpool needed to spend in that way to really kick on to a new level.
That was before Brendan Rodgers found a way to play which came within an inch of winning the title last season.
He favours building from the ground up and cannot be wrong on the basis of one bad result against a top class defence.
Time will show that Villa will be a handful for big teams and Rodgers must also be allowed to breathe.
