Next generation making their mark for club and country

It's been a good year with club and country for a batch of young Irish players who hope to experience more joy in the European U19 Championship finals in Romania next month.

Matt Doherty (Wolves), Jeff Hendrick (Derby), Joe Shaughnessy (Aberdeen), Declan Walker (Wrexham) and Sean Murray (Watford) all made first-team appearances for their clubs while star keeper Aaron McCarey -- who kept three clean sheets in three qualifying games -- had played League of Ireland football for Monaghan United before moving to Wolves, where he's highly regarded.

Another key player for the U19s is Sunderland man John Egan, who has a great sporting pedigree -- his dad is the Kerry GAA legend of the same name. And there are some home-based success stories too as Bray Wanderers striker Conor Murphy and Bohs defender Roberto Lopez have impressed in the LOI this season.
