New deal keeps Benson at Oriel
The blow for Dundalk fans of the imminent loss of David McMillan has been softened by the decision by key midfielder Robbie Benson to stay with the club.
SPL side St Johnstone had been heavily linked with moves for the Dundalk pair of McMilan and Benson, and while McMillan's future is still undecided with a move to Scotland still in the offing, Benson has agreed to stay and has signed a new on-year deal.
"I'm happy to get it done. I'm going in to my third season with the club now so I'm looking forward to it," said the Athlone native.
"I've had a very successful two years and obviously losing the FAI Cup final last season left a bitter taste in our mouths but it's given us a good drive to come back next year focused and hopefully regain everything that we gave away last year, progress in Europe and retain the EA Sports Cup as well."
Dundalk have, to date, retained most of last season's squad, with squad players Shane Grimes and Ciaran O'Connor leaving, as well as Steven Kinsella, whose loan deal from Everton has expired while Niclas Vemmelund plans to return to Denmark.
With a cash injection expected on the back of proposed investment by US Firm Peak6, boss Stephen Kenny will be able to make more additions to his squad.
Dundalk have already signed up Dean Jarvis (Derry City), Stephen Folan and Ronan Murray (Galway United) as well as bringing striker Pat Hoban back to Oriel Park after a spell in England.
Peak6 are still in talks with Dundalk's owners about a takeover which would revitalise the Co Louth club, with hopes of completing a revamp of their Oriel Park home and their training facilities.
