Moyne's boys raise game to match success of girls' team

MOYNE Community School celebrated double success last week when their senior boys' side won the West Leinster League Under-19 Division One final and their girls won the Under-16 Leinster Cup.

The girls beat Kilcullen's Cross & Passion College in Athlone, while the senior boys' side saw off holders Moate CS in Longford thanks to a victory on penalties.

In the boys' final, striker Declan Mimnagh opened the scoring for Moyne mid-way through the first-half, only for Moate to equalise through Lee Scanlon after the break.

With extra-time scoreless, the referee signalled for penalty kicks, where Moyne proved superior. Brian Ennis, Barry McKeown and Ger Perseville scored as Conor Devlin saved crucially to seal the victory.

"It was a really good game and the lads had to play very well to beat a good Moate side," said manager Paddy McPhillips.

"The incredible thing is there is a super tradition of girls' soccer in the school in recent years and the boys are now starting to play their part."

MOYNE U19 BOYS WEST DUBLIN FINALISTS: Conor Devlin, Stephen Leddy, Podge Gill, Conor Heslin (Darren Quinn 71), David Bermingham, Barry McKeown, Eoin Keane, Damien Haughton, Ger Perseville, Brian Ennis, Declan Mimnagh.
