Mourinho to send Blues in for the kill
JOSE Mourinho will go for the kill when Chelsea take on Basel in St Jakob Park tomorrow, more than keen to atone for a humiliating defeat by the Swiss champions two months ago.
The Chelsea boss is happy with Chelsea's response to their first home Champions League defeat in almost ten years. A 4-0 win at Steaua Bucharest and back-to-back 3-0 victories over Schalke leave them poised to stroll into the knock-out phase.
But Mourinho wants to put qualification to bed early because of the club's busy December programme.
"We are going to try to win and kill," Mourinho said. "We have so many matches in December that if we can have one less – and the one less is the crucial match against Steaua – it would be a help."
Chelsea meet Steaua on December 11 but the right result in Basel would mean Mourinho can send out the reserves.
"We are going to try to win. In the end if you get a point you qualify, you have a point, but we have to try to win the game there," he said.
"Also because it was not a good feeling to lose against them at home – so, no revenge, nothing, not at all, but to try to win against a team that beat us at Stamford Bridge I think is important."
Chelsea meet Arsenal on December 23 and complete the festive fixture list with games against Swansea and Liverpool.
"Let's see how we arrive there," he said. "Who knows what happens? Who knows in which position we are and they are on December 23? Who knows?
"Maybe they are third and we are fifth? You never know. In this Premier League, anything can happen."
