Dublin's Metro Girls' League enjoyed a double success over the weekend as their Under-15 Northside team and Southside selection qualified for national finals to give the players a boost during these troubled times.

The Northside Academy selection, coached by Stephen Caswell, Aileen Linders, Kieran Buckley, made it through to the Gaynor Cup final thanks to a 2-1 win over Sligo Leitrim Youths on Saturday and will face South Tipperary in two weeks' time. The goal-scorers in the semi were were Katie McCarn and Nia Hannon.

The Southside squad coached by Paul Murray, Derek Fitzpatrick, Damien Power, had to travel down to Kerry on Sunday in their Gaynor Bowl semi but came away with a handsome 7-0 win with a side that featured John Giles' grand-daughter Jill and Freya Fitzpatrick, who beat a brain tumour two years ago to win her place back in the MGL Academy with the aid of all the coaching staff there and the director of football, Philip Henry.

Jill banged in a penalty while Freya featured at full-back, helping keep a clean sheet for her team. The other scorers were goal scorers on the day were Joy Ralph, Teagan Walsh, Michelle Koudjou, Jess Fitzgerald, Lily Ryan and Keavy Collins.

Henry said: "To get to the finals with everything that has gone on this year is a great achievement, I am very lucky I have fantastic committed coaches that get to work with some of the most talented players."
