McCarthy future is assured -- King

END of debate - Ireland's U21 team boss Noel King insists that James McCarthy's display as captain of the U21 side against Hungary last night has ended all talk about the Wigan player's future with Ireland.

McCarthy led by example as the U21s beat Hungary 2-1 in Sligo, but the Scottish-born midfielder, whose relationship with Giovanni Trapattoni has not always been smooth, is today in Dublin as part of the senior squad for the Euro qualifiers against Slovakia and Russia.

And manager King says the subject of McCarthy's commitment is now closed.

"This should be the final nail in the coffin, he wants to play for Ireland," said King as he released McCarthy to link up with the seniors.

"The way he gave his energy last night, everyone should play like that. When a player is called in to play for the international team and he turns in a performance like that, it speaks volumes.

"That fellow wants to play for Ireland, it's obvious, so that's all put to bed. It will take a bit of time, he's not a full player yet, but he's smashing.

"James is an inspiration but there are a lot of inspirational players in that squad," added King as goals from Robbie Brady and Rhys Murphy earned Ireland's U21s their win.
