Lennon lets rip at team

NEIL LENNON exploded in anger at his team after yesterday's 1-0 home defeat at the hands of St Johnstone.

The Perth side were without a goal in all three SPL matches this season but a Dave Mackay shot in the 59th minute found the back of the net and sent the Celtic support into despair.

There was no comforting arm round the shoulders when the home players reached the dressing room, with Lennon almost as scathing as after the Scottish Cup defeat by Ross County, which looked like costing him the Parkhead job. On that occasion, he accused the players of going out of every competition with a whimper after falling to the First Division side – and yesterday's verdict was almost as vicious.

“My front six were bang average and I am more angry with them than anyone else,” slammed the Hoops boss. “We missed clear-cut chances. We were complacent in front of goal – wasteful. The longer it goes at 0-0, you give the opposition encouragement. “We missed simple chances and I am fed up with it. I am fed up missing penalties as well. It would have given us a real great start. It was an immature performance. “They need to toughen up mentally and do better – all the mature things you expect from a Celtic team trying to go for the title.”

From the third minute, when Kris Commons saw his penalty saved by Peter Enckleman, it was downhill for Celtic as they failed to shake off the hangover of their Europa League stalemate with Sion in midweek.

If Celtic are knocked out by the Swiss outfit in midweek, Lennon will find himself back in the spotlight with his judgement called into question.
