Lenihan: 'I could have played inter-county'

Ireland hopeful Darragh Lenihan says he has no regrets about turning down a possible inter-county GAA career to stick with soccer.

The Blackburn Rovers man is this week enjoying his first call-up to the Irish senior squad, but talent runs in the family as his brother, Donal, is a key member of the Meath senior panel, a route that was open to Darragh.

'Yeah, I could have played county level," he says. "Andy McEntee, who is the manager now, spoke to me, said 'we need you for the Leinster minor final' against Dublin. I said I was under contract at Blackburn and couldn't play. I don't think he understood the repercussions if I did play in that game. Football (soccer) was the one I started with at four years of age."
