Kingscourt Harps scoop FAI club award

Kingscourt Harps were in dreamland last week following the announcement by the FAI to award them the honour of 'Club of the Year'

Following on from a similar accolade bestowed upon them by the Meath & District League at the annual awards Night in June, they faced some very stiff opposition from various Monthly award winners including Navan Club Parkvilla.

The quality on display in Whites Hotel Wexford by each Club in a specially designed display area for each one was incredible especially the graphics and attention to detail, and each one must have justifiably harboured ambitions of being selected for the overall prize.

Kingscourt's hard working Secretary and one of the founder members was speechless when requested to address the large gathering which included a twenty strong contingent from his own Club.

Kingscourt Harps was formed in 1998, since then, they have developed excellent facilities and have membership in excess of 350 players. The total cost to date on development is approximately €700,000 which consist of Club Rooms, Car Park, Floodlighting and a full size FIFA 2 Star All Weather Synthetic Pitch which was completed in August 2009 at a cost of €424,000.

The pitch is the very same standard and quality of Oriel Park, in Dundalk. Since 1998 they have received a total of €196,000 in grants from the National Lottery Sports Capital Programme.

The club caters for players and groups of all ages, the adult ladies team is affiliated to the Dublin Women's Soccer League, three adult men's teams are registered in the Meath & District League.

For players aged 11-16 there are seven teams, which are affiliated to the NECSL, and for players aged 9-10 affiliated to the Cavan underage League.

They also host their own academy for boys & girls aged 5-8, which is run every Friday evening from April-Oct. There are a total of 135 players registered with an average of 10 coaches in attendance each week. MDL Chairman John Gorman was present to witness the historic announcement and he expressed his utmost pride in seeing a Club from his League being honoured in such a fashion. He also paid compliments to the great efforts put in by Parkvilla who are the longest established club in Meath with their Senior team playing in Leainster Senior League Intermediate Section, and their reserves participating in the MDL along with numerous underage sides helping to serve the needs of the Navan area.
