Kelly called up to Doolin's U23 squad
DUNDALK defender Shaun Kelly received another boost over the weekend as the former Hearts man was called into the Ireland U23 squad for Wednesday's clash with England in Waterford, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.
Kelly enjoyed his weekend as, on Friday night, Dundalk beat Sligo Rovers 1-0 to stay on top of the Premier Division table and he helped Ian Foster's side keep another clean sheet.
Defender Kelly did well while playing for the U23s in a training game against the Ireland senior side last week and was name-checked by Giovanni Trapattoni afterwards as one of the more impressive players in the home-based side.
And today Paul Doolin has drafted Kelly into his squad for that RSC meeting, with an England side made up of Conference players, as a replacement for Galway United man Karl Sheppard.
Former Everton striker Sheppard has received a late call-up to the Ireland U19 squad, which heads off to Kyiv today to take on host nation Ukraine, England and Bosnia in a three-match qualifying tournament for the U19 European Championship finals.
