Walkover earns Rovers U12D1 title

IT MAY NOT have been the way they wanted to win it, but Wicklow Rovers B have proved to be the best side in the Heatons/Sportsworld WDSL Under 12 Division 1 for the 2009/10 campaign.

They took the league title without kicking a ball as they received a walk-over from Rathnew AFC who did not contest their fixture at Shamrock Park on Tuesday May 11th last.

Rovers began the season with a bang back in September 2009 with a fine opening day away victory over Ashford Rovers.

Liam Kavanagh and Jamie Dempsey-Keenan both netted twice at Ballinalea Park along with Rory O'Kelly in the 5-0 win.

But just a week later, they went down 2-1 at home to Arklow Town B despite a Kieran Bloomfield strike at Whitegates.

The start of October did not bring any luck as Rovers lost 2-0 away to Enniskerry A at Ballyman Road.

However, Wicklow got back to winning ways with a 6-0 home success over Ardmore Rovers A.

Both O'Connor and Dempsey-Keenan registered double's with Mark Egan and Bloomfield bagging singles.

They then left the Tech Pitch with all three points by defeating Carnew AFC 4-2 as Bloomfield's double was added to by O'Connor and Kavanagh.

The end of the month brought a walk-over from Greystones United C who did not field a team at Whitegates.

Bloomfield stole the show at the start of November, as he rattled in all five goals in a 5-1 home triumph over Carnew.

Wicklow's next outing wasn't until the end of the month. But they found the net six times when beating Ashford 6-0.

Both O'Connor and Bloomfield scored twice with Luke Finlayson and Rory O'Kelly also on the mark at Whitegates.

It got even better in the middle of December with a fine 8-0 home win over Rathnew.

Both Kavanagh and Bloomfield helped themselves to treble with Dempsey Keenan and Peter Thornton also fining the net.

And they claimed an early Christmas present at Whitegates as Alan Power and Bloomfield were on the score-sheet against Enniskerry in a 2-0 win.

They had to wait until March 2010 for their next league fixture. But Rovers turned on the style against Ardmore in Bray to win 8-1.

Kieran Bloomfield scored four more times with Power, James Nolan, Kavanagh and Luke Finlayson completing their tally at the Ballywaltrim Recreational Park.

A week later, the Green and White's had to come from behind against Arklow at the Community College to snatch a draw thanks to Kavanagh's equaliser.

They rounded off their competitive in April with a convincing away win over Greystones.

Bloomfield (3), Kavanagh (2), Finlayson (2), Power and O'Connor all scored in the 9-0 success at the Woodlands.

Their record is played 14; won 11 (including two walk-over's), drew once and lost twice.

In total, they scored 53 goals, conceded just 11 and kept five clean sheets.

The Wicklow Rovers B squad consists of Brendan Hawes; Timmy Doherty, Daragh Hosey, Mark Egan, Craig Waldron; Alan Power, Rory O'Kelly, Liam Kavanagh, Luke Finlayson; Darragh O'Connor, Kieran Bloomfield, James Nolan, Peter Thornton, Jamie Dempsey-Keenan and Conor Moore.

They are managed by Jimmy Nolan with Brian O'Connor and Niall Keenan being the assistants bosses.

* Enniskerry A, Arklow Town B and Carnew AFC are still battling it out for the runners-up position.
