Byrne on the double as Slaney cruise to Med Bar Cup final

Derry Rovers........................................................0

Slaney Rovers......................................................2

Division 3 side Derry Rovers were no match for a well-organised Slaney Rovers in the semi-final of the Med Bar Cup.

Derry had an off day, but Slaney dominated the game throughout and the tie was rather all one-way traffic.

Derry made it difficult for the visitors, however, early in the half their 'keeper forcing a good save from Davey Nolan following a couple of Slaney corner kicks.

A mistake by the Derry 'keeper let Slaney's Dominic Byrne in to open the scoring on 30 minutes.

Shane Murphy and Dominic Byrne went on to create further chances but the Derry 'keeper was valiant in his efforts and deprived the visitors of further first-half goals.

Derry chances were hard come by on the day so the half ended 1-0.

In the second half, Derry had an early chance but the Slaney 'keeper Brian Leonard made a good save.

Slaney then began to control the midfield and the Derry defence was caught napping for Slaney's second goal by Dominic Byrne.

As a contest the game was over as Slaney were in complete control and only needed to stroll through the remainder of the half to advance to the final.

Brennan the hero for Ridge

Ridge Rangers........................................................1

Killeshin FC............................................................1

(AET: Ridge won 3-2 on pens)

Ridge are developing a cup pedigree but a fine Killeshin outfit tested it to the limit in this Douglas Jewellers Carlow Cup fifth-round fixture.

Killeshin subjected their neighbours' mettle to the most demanding of tests in this encounter, which was dominated by well-organised defences.

Ridge took an early lead when Damien Sheehan crossed for Liam Dunne to shoot to the net on 10 minutes.

The game ebbed and flowed, with Killeshin gradually making an impression on the Ridge defence and had Niall and Ian Brennan remained calm when resented with decent scoring chances the Premier Division side might have been in arrears before Ian Brennan set up Eddie Brady to equalise before full-time.

Extra-time was uneventful with penalties following and it was during this phase that Ridge 'keeper Adrian Brennan made three outstanding saves before Jimmy Carroll converted the all-important penalty which ensured that Ridge advance to the next round.
