Hunt is on for Hull ace

PREMIER League newcomers Newcastle United and West Brom are ready to join the chase for Ireland star Stephen Hunt, who is set to leave Hull City following their relegation to the Championship.

Hunt missed the last 11 games of the Premier League season due to a foot injury which will keep him out of action until August.

Despite the injury Hunt, Hull's top scorer this season with six goals, will be in demand.

Wolves and Everton are longtime admirers of the winger and Mick McCarthy is expected to make a special effort to reunite him with former Reading teammate Kevin Doyle.

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is also very keen on the 28-year-old and could face competition from West Brom.

Hunt says he's in the dark over any transfer deals as he works his way back to full fitness from his foot injury.

The Waterford man began that comeback yesterday with a session in the gym but he does expect to leave Hull for financial reasons.

“I presume the club will want to sell me in terms of the overall financial structure. I didn't want to go. If we had stayed up I'd have been happy to stay ay Hull but we're not in the Premier League now and they may need to sell me. If I do move on, it will be with a clear conscience, and I can be honest about that,” Hunt told the Herald.

“In January we had an agreement that they would sell me due to the financial situation that would arise from relegation. The chairman has been very good to me. He said once I gave my all for Hull he'd have no problem in honouring that agree www.herald.ie ment for me to go. I have done that, I have done well for Hull. Unfortunately, I haven't delivered as much as I'd like because we've been relegated.

“The club say they will be willing to sell me at a reduction of the price they'd have got for me in January. I have no idea what that reduction will be, and if a club will come up with the money. “All I can do is concentrate on getting fit and see what happens,” added Hunt, who expects to miss the start of the season in August but hopes to be back for the European Championship qualifiers in September.
