Hands off the FAI says FIFA

The FAI have secured the backing of UEFA and FIFA in their public battle with Minister for Sport Shane Ross.

Today is a key day for the FAI as they hold an EGM to clear the way for a reform programme, to be approved at next week's AGM.

But Ross has been at odds with the FAI, the minister earlier this week contacting FAI president Donal Conway to ask him to back off from his plan to stand again as president, unopposed, at the AGM.

And the FAI last night revealed the contents of a joint letter from UEFA and FIFA, pointing out that FIFA rules "oblige all member associations, including the FAI, to manage their affairs independently and without undue influence from any third party" and that government interference could lead to the FAI's suspension from football.

"We kindly request that you communicate the foregoing to the relevant authorities," the letter said.
