Glebe won't go out with a Bang'

Glebe North could be untying the ribbons on their Cahill Cup crown at the first time of asking tomorrow, as they open their defence of the title with a sticky away day at Bangor Celtic.

Liam Kelly's side won the Cahill Cup in spectacular fashion last May when they beat Wayside Celtic in a dramatic final in Tolka Park, but tomorrow's trip to Rathfarnham will be a million miles away from that sunshine day.

Bangor, former winners of this trophy too, will be looking to relaunch their season after a disappointing start to the year has left John Scott's team well off the pace. Dumping Glebe out the exit door will be just the tonic for Scott's Celts.

Since the turn of the year, Bangor have won just one from their four league games and last week suffered a shock defeat by bottom-of-the-table Mount Merrion, who cruised by the Celts 3-0.

CAHILL CUP 1st Round (Selected Games)

MOUNT MERRION v CELBRIDGE TOWN

After recording their first win in a dozen league games, Mount Merrion will be itching to get into this game. Town have won only once in their last seven and sit a league below their hosts, so Merrion will be expected to make it two wins on the bounce. Verdict: Mount Merrion.

BANGOR CELTIC v GLEBE NORTH

Bangor may be well out of the title hunt, but they will look for this competition to be a catalyst for their season. Glebe, though, will not want to let go of their title at the first hurdle and that should see them through. Verdict: Glebe North.

WAYSIDE CELTIC v VERONA

Verona are fresh from a remarkable victory in the FAI Intermediate Cup last weekend, but Wayside will be waiting in the long grass. The Celts are on a three-game winning streak and should stretch that out, but only just, as they bring Verona back down to earth. Verdict: Wayside Celtic.

POSTAL UNITED v FIRHOUSE CLOVER

This is the first of a two-part installment in this Tallaght derby after both sides were also drawn together in the Metropolitan Cup. Firhouse will be favourites and should be smart enough to advance. Verdict: Firhouse Clover.
