Ferguson: Quality in our squad paying off
NEVER mind the result, look at the quality. That's Alex Ferguson's message after Manchester United leap-frogged Manchester City to take control of the Premier League and the title race.
"I don't care about being top of the league just now. More important was our own performance," claimed Fergie.
"I'm happy to be there because only a few weeks ago we were five points, and at one time seven points, behind and now we're a point ahead.
"So we've turned around eight points and it's a credit to the players and also to the resilience of our squad because, as everyone knows, we've had a lot of injuries," he added.
Ferguson doled out praise to all comers after the win over West Brom but focused particularly on the centre of his defence.
"Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand? Fantastic performance by them. I think when you get that solid foundation, you can go into other things in terms of the attacking part, and there's no concerns over what's happening at the back.
"The experienced players like Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs know what's required because they have been here before.
"They want the title this season just as much as when they were first setting out on their careers.
"They don't let us down and it's this quality that has made it easy for me to give players like Giggs and Scholes new contracts that take them past the age when most footballers are ready for an easier life.
"The young ones are following suit and shown the same determination and preparedness to go the extra yard when necessary.
"Players like Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Jonny Evans have shown they are made of the right stuff.
"When I think back to the time when so many critics were ready for me to move Evans on, I hope they're questioning their judgment as the boy has been in sure form lately and was many people's choice as man of the match against Spurs.
"Another young player we kept faith with, and who is now proving so many wrong, is our keeper, David De Gea.
"We have a good bunch of players and are at the stage of the season when it will show," claimed Ferguson.
