DUNDALK striker Vinny Faherty is relishing the chance to take on Shamrock Rovers in the opening game of the new League of Ireland season on Friday.
Stephen Kenny will take charge of Dundalk in a competitive game for the first time against his former club at Oriel Park next Friday and Faherty, a close-season signing from St Pat's, says the Lilywhites are feeling confident after some good pre-season form, including an impressive display against local rivals Drogheda.
"Shamrock Rovers are a good side and Friday will be a good test, but if we play like we played against Drogheda United, we have a great chance," says Faherty.
"I know we lost but I am much happier with our prospects after our display. We have so much more to take from the game and our performance from start to finish was great.
"We have a good shot at Rovers because of how we have performed and we are at home. It's important we take advantage of that. We have the quality to upset them and we know we can.
"We have to attack them and pay them due respect but not overdo it. I am really looking forward to the season and Friday can't come quick enough."
