Fagan: Saints need derby wins

ST PATRICK'S Athletic will have to start winning Dublin derbies if they are serious about winning silverware this season, according to Saints striker Chris Fagan.

Liam Buckley's side last week embarked on a run of fixtures which sees them play Dublin rivals four times in the space of five weeks, continuing with tonight's game away to Shelbourne before further clashes with Shamrock Rovers and UCD, but Saints fans were disappointed to see the side drop points in last week's 0-0 draw away to Bohemians.

"You need to win your derbies if you want to win things and we are no different," says Fagan, who moved to Pats from Bohs at the start of the season.

"We feel we can challenge this season, it will be tough to take on the likes of Rovers and Sligo and Derry but I think we have the players to do it, but the derby games are crucial so we have to try to come away from Tolka Park with the points tonight.

"Last week against Bohs the pitch was terrible and that didn't help so we can only hope that the surface is better at Tolka Park tonight. We didn't create enough and we were disappointed with the day overall," added the former Manchester United trainee, who has had a slow start to his career at Richmond Park due to disciplinary reasons.

"I had a three-game ban at the start of the season so Bohs last week was my league debut for Pats, it was very frustrating," says Fagan, who was the Gypsies' leading scorer last term with 11 league goals.

"It was hard for me as I was building up my form in the Setanta Cup games but then I had to drop back out of the team for the league because of suspension but I am raring to go now."
