Dunner's career on a knife-edge

RICHARD DUNNE'S career is on the line after Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert revealed the latest setback for Giovanni Trapattoni's best defender, writes Paul Hyland.

"Richard has had a setback in his return from injury and will be assessed in the next few days," claimed Lambert last night after Newcastle administered another painful defeat at Villa Park.

This time, it looks like Dunne's problem relates to his hip and after missing all of Ireland's games since Euro 2012, there must now be serious doubts about his availability for the World Cup double-header in March against Sweden and Austria and beyond.

Meanwhile, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has been rebuffed in his attempt to bring Aiden McGeady back from Moscow, priced out of the market by Spartak's £5m valuation.
