Mick McCarthy hailed his Irish players as they dug out a vital point in Denmark which could prove vital in the race to qualify for Euro 2020.

The Irish side had gone behind to a 76th minute goal from Southampton man Pierre Emile Hojberg and McCarthy looked as if he was about to suffer the first defeat of his second reign as Ireland boss.

But a headed effort from Shane Duffy, from a free kick by sub Alan Judge, got the better of Kasper Schmeichel and Ireland were delighted to escape from the Parken Stadium with a draw.

"Despite a setback they've kept going and shown great spirit and resistance. They've shown that fighting spirit that Irish teams have in abundance. I don't think anybody can outscrap us and outrun us," McCarthy said.

"If you get the delivery to big Shane, he is very hard to stop. He will always score if you give him that service."

In last night's other game, Gibraltar lost 3-0 away to Georgia, with Gibraltar due in Dublin today to prepare for Monday's qualifier at Lansdowne Road.
