Downing set for Boro deal
West Ham midfielder Stewart Downing was back on his native Teesside as he prepared to re-join former club Middlesbrough.
The 30-year-old England international was pictured arriving for a medical with Boro looking to seal a sensational swoop.
Downing, perhaps the highest-profile graduate of the north-east club's famed Academy, was left out of the Hammers' squad for their Europa League clash with Birkirkara as the Teessiders looked to push home their interest.
He began his career with his home-town club before earning a £12million move to Aston Villa in July 2009, and swapped life in the Midlands for Liverpool, who paid £20million for his services two years later.
The midfielder headed to West Ham for £5million in August 2013, but appears not to be part of new manager Slaven Bilic's plans.
